Death Satan Black Metal: Let’s Rant!

Alright, so welcome to post number four, “Death Satan Black Metal”, where I’m going to post my first rant. I’m going to start with a rather simple topic for this, being that it is my first (probably of many) rant(s) that I will be posting. It’s a topic that isn’t exactly…uncontroversial within mostly the “extreme” genres of metal, and is often brought up in comments on videos by people who really have no idea what the hell it is they’re arguing about, and are more than likely just trolling in hopes to gain attention or cause a stir.

No, this isn’t going to be a rant about the sometimes-amusing aspects of black metal videos, or the occasional cheesy lines in certain songs.

Nope. This is going to be about “fashion”.

Please, feel free to groan in disgust…

Jari of Wintersun approves of your groans! (Taken from the Gamma Rayquaza page on Facebook.)
…but make sure you continue reading once you’re done so you know just what side of this argument I’m on.

Now that you’re finished groaning (I hope), chances are that I’m probably on your side with this debate…

…so long as “your side” is the side where bands worry way too damn much about how they look in clothes these days, then yeah, I’m actually definitely on your side. Seriously. Certain bands’ obsessions with clothing and appearance these days have just gotten so out of hand. I’m not talking about wearing corpse paint and bullet belts or anything; hell, even those long gowns or “dresses”, as some people like to refer to them as (really, I’m not all too sure to call them myself so we’ll probably stick to ‘gowns’ on this one), are fine by me. Some guys – keep in mind I am a matron – even look pretty good in them, though of course good looks are not the key criteria for making some excellent metal, whatever sub-genre it may be.

AND NEITHER ARE THE GOWNS OR ANY OTHER ELABORATE COSTUME YOU FEEL IS NECESSARY.

Source: metalmemes666.tumblr.com (thanks to Tumblr comrade urdjupet for helping me find this).
Yes, Shagrath, black metal is a form of music, not a fashion statement, though at this point I wouldn’t call your band black metal (rant for another time!) to begin with. If you want to wear corpse paint and look like a bad ass (not being sarcastic with that one) and show off your skill in aesthetics if you think it increases your stage presence and theatrics

Dutch symphonic black metallers Carach Angren show off their sick corpse paint.
then, buddy, go for it.

If you want to get all dressed up for a music video and look the part in something that usually requires you to take on a completely different role and is for the purpose of making yourself look like a bad ass gladiator or something or other

Nergal in Behemoth's "Alas, Lord is Upon Me" music video.
then god damn, do it; because the result, such as the photo posted above, can look incredible.

If you want to wear chain mail or ten pounds of leather or gowns or masks or cover yourself in corpse paint because it fits with your “image” and translates well with your music (don’t go on stage in corpse paint and complete gladiator get-up if you’re in a power metal band unless it’s Halloween) then holy hell that’s your decision.

So where’s my rant?

Here it is:

Do. Not. Make this your main focus, and stop being so concerned with what you’re going to wear with your next album. You do not need to be covered head to toe in leather and metal like Mister Shagrath depicted above in order to “be black metal” (whatever the hell kind of black metal he’s trying to be there) or to “be death metal”. You do not need to “look the part” in order to be a part of a black metal band. Corpse paint is not a requirement! Don’t believe me? Try this: it’s a choice.

Emperor chose to ditch their corpse paint and they’re one of the most known black metal bands currently (granted they are not longer together, sadly).

The only two members of Mayhem (the “true” era) to wear corpse paint were Dead and Euronymous.

Dissection is not wearing corpse paint in any of their pictures.

Compare the number of photos of Varg Vikernes with corpse paint to those of him without it. In some of his most iconic photos, he is depicted without corpse paint.

Do I really need to even mention Quorthon.

Do I even need to say Venom.

These guys were the some of the first. These guys laid the freaking foundations for the genre! How often did you see any of them dressed like Behemoth was in the Evangelion photo shoot (except for maybe Varg)?

Not very.

I’m not knocking Behemoth or anything (as I’ve said previously, they are one of my favorite bands and I’m even listening to Evangelion as I type up this rant), but it’s just gotten to the point of being irritating recently. Especially now since so many, SO MANY bands are turning to Toxic Vision for their clothes. It looks like every band is wearing the same damn thing! Your vest does not need to be that elaborate, especially considering the people watching you are either going to be blinded by flashing lights or fog, in complete darkness, or too busy headbanging to even care about how many studs you managed to fit onto your clothes (not that they’d really care anyway). You do not need pentagrams sewn into your jeans, or raggedy-looking outfits that look like you stole them from an orphan before you walked into the venue. You don’t need silk hoods, because honestly we want you to headbang with us and that’s just going to get in the way.

You don’t need to be so fucking elaborate. It is getting to be so unnecessarily showy that it’s almost sickening. I’m not trying to berate Toxic Vision or anything – seriously, that’s not my intention; I’m arguing against the fact that bands feel the need to wear these ridiculous pieces, but I am not attempting to belittle the designer’s efforts (and even if I was, this is my opinion which I am entitled to, and I will post on my blog if I feel is relevant) – but it’s getting pretty annoying when I actually know now what to expect whenever a band announces their allegiance with TV for their new gear.

And it’s getting kind of boring.

First, it was Shagrath’s overly-studded vests and pants, to the point where I personally thought it just looked horrendous and completely over-thought, followed by Behemoth announcing that they were using the same designer for the release of The Satanist, shortly after which I saw photos from Poland’s Impact Fest and was not very impressed (almost let-down by Nergal’s outfit, in fact, and disappointed that Orion’s vest looked incredibly bulky and he had his hair in a pony tail, both of which, it seemed, prevented him from windmilling, though I’m sure there’s a better explanation for that as I am aware he has experienced neck pain from doing so in the past). At some point, Týr had vests made for them for one of the Paganfest tours, which were admittedly better, to me, than Behemoth’s outfits but still extremely over-the-top, and now Turisas has fallen in line with these guys and I could have told you what they would look like before I even saw the pictures.

More than that, as someone commented on a photo for their new album posted to Facebook, everyone is starting to look like they’re in the same band…like TV clothes are becoming a uniform for god sakes. The predictability in the outfits is too high for so many bands to start having TV as the source of their stage outfits. I want to look at Turisas and think “Turisas, Warlord, Olli!”; not look at Behemoth and think “did Seth borrow that jacket from Mathias?”

Before some people start taking this the complete wrong way and before I accidentally make that the focus of this rant, which was not at all my intention but was a relevant portion that needed to be included, let’s move on to comments such as this:

Comment from Bruce Payne on Hate's "Threnody" music video.
"Everybody in the band looks the part, but the singer. He looks like a pussy. they need to find someone better that looks the part. and this band would look and sound really awesome."

He doesn’t look the part.

ATF Sinner

does not look the part

in his own band.

Hate sporting some 'gowns'.
Let me think this over…

Okay, thought about it.

You’re a fucking moron.

So what exactly is it about this comment that gets under my skin? The simple fact that the Mush-For-Brains commenter paid absolutely no attention to the band's sound, and instead let his judgement be clouded purely by how they look, specifically ATF Sinner, the frontman/vocalist/guitarist/founder of the band (the first two photos are actually from the Morphosis era, which is the album that possesses the song in question). He automatically passed judgement on the band solely based off how they looked. Not Sinner's vocals, not Destroyer's guitar sweep at the very beginning of the song, not Hexen's impeccable drumming, not Mortifer's windmilling if we want to focus on visual aspects...nope. None of that mattered simply because, to this shallow individual, ATF Sinner "looked like a pussy".

So no, it's not just bands that focus far too much on the way they look, it's certain "fans" as well. If you are the kind of idiot who thinks that replacing someone who looks weak or doesn't "look the part" will automatically make a band sound better, you need to hit yourself in the face with a frying pan.

If you are a "fan" who passes judgement on a band based off of how they look and NOT based off their level of talent, you need to hit yourself in the face with a steaming-hot frying pan, repeatedly.

I'm not a purist who is trying to revert back to cardboard-box-quality black metal (as I said, this rant is about clothes, not the music itself) or wearing nothing but black jeans, black leather jackets, black this, black that, bullet belts, corpse paint, and yadda yadda yadda. If you wear that, I don't care. If you wear what Behemoth wore for The Apostasy, I don't care. If you're in the middle like Quazarre and the rest of the Devilish Impressions crew, I don't care. Just do not make clothes your focus. Do not spend so much time worrying about what your next outfit is going to be, or how you can one-up your last one, or how elaborate you can be...or how many damn studs you can cram onto the back of a vest. Wear whatever the hell you want.

Just play some good metal while you do.

My Soundtrack to the Apocalypse

So we all tend to have those albums that we hold dear to us for whatever reason; those albums that we can throw in the disc tray and listen to it from start to finish without a problem, without skipping over any of the songs, and being able to tap, hum, nod, or full-on headbang every note because we love it so much. Those albums we’ve played to the point of overkill, but we still never tire of them. They could be the first album you heard, the last album a band has ever put out, or just a really, really killer album that you love so much for many reasons, one reason, or no particular reason at all. It could be to others a band’s worst album, or to a majority their very best album. It could be underrated, overrated, well known, or an album from a period where the band was the same but with a different name so nobody knows of the album at all. Whatever it is, we all have a myriad of these albums.

They’re known as our favorites.

Favorites can be extremely hard to pick, but once you finally settle on one, if ever you do, that album, to you, is the best thing since the genesis of heavy metal in its entirety.

…Maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement, but it's certainly true for some people, I’m sure.

Anyway, the title of this blog entry was of course “My Soundtrack to the Apocalypse”, so I’m going to share ten of my favorite albums. They’ll be in no particular order, I’m just going to pick any ten of my overall favorite albums (needless to say, only one from any band) and list them with a short explanation of why. They could be from any genre of metal (as they’ll all be metal albums, I guarantee), from any band, from any decade, from any of the bands’ eras, etc.

So, without any further adieu, I present my Soundtrack to the Apocalypse:

1.) HATE-Morphosis (2008)
Running Time: 38:50
Released On: Listenable Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (2) "Threnody", (4) "Catharsis", (7) "Omega"

Often hailed as one of Hate's best albums, Morphosis is definitely my favorite of theirs. "Threnody" is the second song I heard from the band (with "Intransigence of Evil" being the first and still a favorite of mine), and have been 100% hooked on them ever since. It is a modern death metal masterpiece, and host to my favorite variant of ATF Sinner's ever-great vocals. It possesses some of my favorite overall lyrics, which are catchy, intelligent, and brutal all at the same time. None of the compositions are overly complex, and the album is not overrun by blast beats (though of course they are present). It's just overall a great album that I can count on to punch me in the face if ever I need something to, and it always delivers. For me, this album is timeless, and will be hard to beat with any of Hate's future efforts. (A more extensive Hate post will come eventually.)

HATE-Omega

2.) AMON AMARTH-Twilight of the Thunder God (2008)
Running Time: 43:31
Released On: Metal Blade Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (1) "Twilight of the Thunder God", (5) "Varyags of Miklagaard", (10) "Embrace of the Endless Ocean"

Arguably Amon Amarth's most known album, Twilight of the Thunder God is my favorite from them. The main reason being that it was the first death metal album I had ever heard. Amon Amarth (specifically this album) is the band responsible for my moving away from listening to little else than Metallica (primarily the Kill-Justice era, don't worry) and got me listening to death metal. Albeit melodic death metal, it still counts, and is this is the album that ushered me into my now favorite extreme genres. This album holds a special place in my heart for that, and is overall a superb, kickass album that will always be one of my favorites for that.

AMON AMARTH-Varyags of Miklagaard

3.) GOJIRA-From Mars to Sirius (2005)
Running Time: 01:06:52
Released On: Listenable Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (6) "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe", (7) "Flying Whales", (10/11) "From Mars/To Sirius"

A lot of my favorite albums are the ones that have the first song I heard from the band that created it. This holds true for Gojira, as my first (and favorite) Gojira song is "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe". A friend showed it to me some years ago, telling me it was the perfect song for his aggression and made him want to slaughter someone, and I was blown away by how incredible it was. I have since seen them live (and man are they incredible live!) where they played "Heaviest", at which point it's safe to say I completely lost my mind. Their riffs are fantastic, the drumming is wonderful, the vocals are simply killer, and they have a really positive message in their lyrics that makes for a good break from constantly hearing songs that proclaim death to mankind and/or religion. Let's go green with Gojira!

GOJIRA-The Heaviest Matter of the Universe

4.) DEATH-The Sound of Perseverance (1998)
Running time: 56:13
Released On: Nuclear Blast
Favorite Tracks Include: (1) "Scavenger of Human Sorrow", (3) "Spirit Crusher", (5) "Flesh and the Power It Holds"

Hate me for saying this, but I didn't immediately like Death. At first, I looked up Individual Thought Patterns and thought it was "okay", but not much more than that. The main reason is because I am perhaps one of the pickiest people ever when it comes to vocals, and, upon first hearing ITP, I was not all too fond of Schuldiner's vocals. It wasn't until I went back sometime later and decided to give SoP a chance with "Spirit Crusher". And I cannot tell you how immediately in-love with it I was. Saying I was floored by "Spirit Crusher" is an insulting understatement. Everything about it, and the rest of the album, is practically perfect. From Chuck's high vocals, to the audible bass, to the all 'round incredible cover of "Painkiller", The Sound of Perseverance is a masterpiece, not just of metal, but of pure musicianship. After SoP got plenty of playtime, I decided to go back and give ITP another chance and struck gold with "The Philosopher" and "Overactive Imagination". Then came Human, Symbolic, Leprosy, Scream Bloody Gore, and finally Spiritual Healing, in that order. That is why SoP is my favorite Death album -- it started the domino effect for me.

DEATH-Spirit Crusher

 5.) CARACH ANGREN-Death Came Through a Phantom Ship (2010)
Running Time: 43:47
Released On: Maddening Media
Favorite Tracks Include: (2) "The Sighting Is a Portent of Doom", (4) "Van Der Decken's Triumph", (7) "Departure Towards a Nautical Curse"

Carach Angren. Easily, easily one of my favorite bands, but this decision was no easy one. All three of their albums so far are insanely good and just as addicting as going to concerts and buying band shirts. Their orchestrations are beautiful, their vocals are incredibly unique, their lyrics and stories are phenomenal...everything about them is just undeniably good. What this decision really came down to for me was the fact that I love to write, and a lot of my inspiration comes from the music I listen to, and I happen to frequent Death Came Through a Phantom Ship for inspiration for one of my current projects. It possesses the perfect elixir to get the creative juices flowing for me, and I owe Carach Angren a huge thank-you for that by creating this beautiful album!

6.) BELPHEGOR-Blood Magick Necromance (2011)
Running Time: 40:42
Released On: Nuclear Blast
Favorite Tracks Include: (2) "Rise to Fall and Fall to Rise", (3) "Blood Magick Necromance", (4) "Discipline Through Punishment"

I can't exactly recall the first Belphegor song I heard (it may have been "Swarm of Rats" from Goatreich - Fleshcult) but "Blood Magick Necromance" was one of the first, and my first favorite. It was the one that got me really into the band, and resulted in this album becoming my favorite of Belphegor's. Strangely, I find this entire album to be quite soothing. Yes, soothing. This dark, demonic, "satanic" album actually soothes me quite a bit. And I don't mean that it's a sort of vent for aggression, not that kind of "soothing". I mean the kind of soothing where I find it to be generally relaxing, the kind that makes my nerves go numb and me feel like my heart is slowing down. I'm not exactly sure what it is that makes me feel this way when I listen to it (though this doesn't just happen with BMN material; it's not an uncommon feeling during "Stigma Diabolicum" either, for example), perhaps it's Helmuth's vocals, or perhaps I'm just a bit nuts. Either way, I guess we all have that one album/band...

BELPHEGOR-Blood Magick Necromance

7.) TÝR-Ragnarok (2006)
Running Time: 1:00:45
Released On: Napalm Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (2) "The Hammer of Thor", (11) "The Hunt", (18*) "Valhalla"

This list needed something somewhat folky and something with clean vocals. And what better to choose from my favorites than Týr? "Valhalla", though one of the bonus tracks*, is my favorite Týr song, and is the one that poked at my interest. When I first discovered them, I was stuck on the aforementioned Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Immortal, Dark Funeral, etc, so these guys were completely different for me. I hadn't even known there was a whole world of Pagan/Folk metal out there at that point (and now, of course, mostly thanks to Týr, I love it)! I believe it was Heri's wonderful voice that drew me in to this band, and now it's that, plus everything else that keeps me...I really can't choose one thing above all others. They're a great, talented group of musicians, and I am definitely looking forward to their next album that will have George Kollias, whom I am quite fond of, as a session drummer!

TÝR-The Hammer of Thor

8.) VESANIA-Distractive Killusions (2007)
Running Time: 43:05
Released On: Napalm Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (1) "Narrenschyff", (2) "The Dawnfall (Hamartia and Hybris)", (4) "Rage of Reason"

There are so many things about this album that make it my favorite from Vesania's small but ultimately incredible discography (a discography that makes me wish Orion and Daray had the time to work on expanding it a bit more), but perhaps the most important one is those vocals!! Orion has SUCH a powerful, daunting voice that is impressively versatile. He's opted to growl more often as opposed to shriek with each album, with the most obvious comparison being between the above record and their first, Firefrost Arcanum, though his growling is utterly fantastic. The spoken parts in "Silence Makes Noise (Eternity - The Mood)" give me chills every time, as does the psychotic laughter in "Narrenschyff". The lyrics are pure works of art, and the "symphonic" half of the music provides a great atmosphere that makes you feel as though you are going mad. This album is the personification of insanity, and the creepy jester on the cover makes you think demented carnival. And that really isn't too far off. (A full review of this album can be expected at some point.)

VESANIA-Rage of Reason

9.) KAMELOT-The Black Halo
Running Time: 57:15
Released On: Steamhammer
Favorite Tracks Include: (1) "March of Mephisto", (8) "Moonlight", (12) "Memento Mori"

I was extremely hesitant with this band at first. Roy Khan's vocals took some time for me to be able to enjoy, but, after I finally got used to them after listening to "March of Mephisto" quite a few times, I couldn't get enough of them. I started listening to them because I found out Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir did guest vocals on "March of Mephisto", and it was around that time that I was completely addicted to Dimmu (I've since moved on from them, of course, as is customary). "March" became my favorite song, and I had only respect for this band after I learned that this album and the one that preceded it, Epica, are based off the story of Faust. Goethe's Faust is one of my favorite works of literature, and I plan on reading Marlowe's Dr. Faustus very soon. Kamelot's rendition of the classic story of Faust is marvelous alone, and made all the better by the fact that it was put to music.

KAMELOT (ft. Shagrath)-March of Mephisto

10.) DECAPITATED-Nihility (2002)
Running Time: 35:01
Released On: Earache Records
Favorite Tracks Include: (4) "Nihility (Anti-Human Manifesto)", (6) "Spheres of Madness", (7) "Babylon's Pride"

OH YES. The third group on this list from Poland, arguably my favorite source of death metal of any kind. Nihility is my favorite album from tech. death band Decapitated. What makes this album my favorite is the song that got me hooked on the band, "Babylon's Pride". It also features Sauron, my favorite Decapitated vocalist, as well as Vitek's simply amazing drumming on "Spheres of Madness", also one of my favorite songs from the band. I could listen to this album over and over again, and still love each and every song as much as when I first heard them. Decapitated is unlike some other bands on this list, in that I did not have to take any extra time to fully enjoy them. The minute I heard "Babylon's Pride", I was finished.

DECAPITATED-Babylon's Pride

So that's it!
That's a list of 10 of my favorite albums. These are not my top ten albums of all time, nor are they in any particular order. This is just a random group of ten of my favorite albums from certain bands. I tried to post bands I hadn't mentioned yet, hence why Behemoth and Vader and such had been left off the list. I hope you enjoyed my list! It had some variety, at least...

Together As One: Matron Discusses BEHEMOTH, WINTERSUN, and Concert Etiquette

Man am I battered! But I guess that's what I should have expected, what with going to see the Decibel Magazine tour with Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Immolation last evening. Bruises everywhere!

Anyway, more of that will come later, but before that there are a few things I want to talk about with this post:
1.) BEHEMOTH's new album title, The Satanist; Inferno's surgery/Behemoth's now inability to partake in this summer's Mayhem Festival
2.) WINTERSUN announces North American headlining tour
3.) Moshing/stage diving (moreso the latter)

So let's get to it!

BEHEMOTH Announces New Album Title: The Satanist
About a week ago (Thurs. May 30th), Polish blackened death metal monsters Behemoth revealed the name of their tenth studio album, the follow-up to 2009's Evangelion and the band's first album since Nergal's leukemia debacle, dubbed The Satanist. Here's what I and two other Behemoth fans thought:

(Post from Tumblr; opinions belong to "Humanure", myself, and "urdjupet" respectively. Links to blogs will follow.)

Behemoth is undoubtedly one of my absolute favorite bands, with the mentioned Demigod being among my favorite albums in general. I am not at all expecting the new album to be terrible. Quite the contrary, actually. However, as Urdjupet stated similar in her post, I could not take it as seriously as someone might have, say, ten years ago. Would the title have worked for shock value (if that's what they were going for) back in the 1990's around the release of Pandemic Incantations and Satanica? Hell yes it would have. But the phrase "the satanist" or "a satanist" just...simply isn't as shocking anymore, and that's most likely attributed to, as Urdjupet said, the little children running around thinking they're so edgy and brutal for "hating God" because they listen to Lamb of God or something of the like.

I also saw someone mention in the comments on the band's official post (I can't recall if it had been on the Behemoth page or Nergal's personal page) that it could get to be confusing for newer fans having one album entitled Satanica and another called The Satanist. This is very true, if you don't pay attention, but it's also a valid point in another way. Having Satanica (which is a much better title than The Satanist, at least in my opinion; it shows further thought rather than a generic phrase) makes it seem as though the new album title is a bit of a recycled idea. The term "satanica" has a bit of originality to it whereas "the satanist" just...falls flat. Am I predicting that new material will be re-hashed old material? Not at all. I'm just comparing my observations is all. And anyway, one of my good companions on Twitter attended Poland's most recent Impact Fest, and she left me with rather high hopes:

(Conversation between myself and Catherine Velis [@Thelema_6] via Twitter.)

This leads into my next point, concerning Inferno's appendix surgery and Behemoth having to drop off this year's Mayhem Fest lineup.

First and foremost: thoughts with Inferno and hoping he gets well very soon!
That is the most important thing to say in this scenario. Yes, for all those in the States, like me, it SUCKS that Behemoth is no longer on the Mayhem Fest lineup, but Inferno's health is much more important than that. Without him, Behemoth would most likely not be what it is today (no disrespect to Nergal, but Inferno is an incredible drummer, and that is one of the things everyone dotes on over Behemoth). And look at the bright side: The Satanist is coming...and new albums from bands of Behemoth’s stature/popularity often come with European AND North American tours.  It will be worth the wait. All this means for me now is I'll probably be less inclined to attend the festival.

As I said earlier, Behemoth is absolutely one of my favorite bands, and I was so eager to see them this summer, and was so disappointed when I heard they were no longer attending. They were one of...actually, THE main reason I was going to go. Don't get me wrong, I'm also a huge fan of Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom, and enjoy the occasional Machine Head, Job For a Cowboy, Mastodon, and Battlecross song (the rest of the line up just kinda...sucks), but I was going for BEHEMOTH. And forget about going to Summer Slaughter instead. If anything's worse than Rob Zombie headlining Mayhem, it's this year's appalling SS line-up, except for two, maybe three bands (Cattle Decapitation and Aeon, I'd definitely see were they on their own).

Main point being: I'm upset I'll have to wait even longer to see one of my favorite bands, but I completely understand why. Plus, no disrespect to another great drummer, Krimh, but it wouldn't feel the same were they to play without Inferno. And I'm looking forward to The Satanist despite the..."cliché", to put it lightly, name.

BEHEMOTH w/ Krimh-Chant For Eschaton 2000 (Live @ Impact Fest 2013):

WINTERSUN Announces N. American Headlining Tour
(A more extensive Wintersun-related post will probably be included in the coming weeks.)

My first reaction to this?

"HOLY SHIT," accompanied by a rather impressive gasp.
Yeah, along with Behemoth, I'm a pretty huge fan of Wintersun. And the guys they're taking along on the tour with them: Fleshgod Apocalypse! Also, Arsis and Starkill are pretty decent bands as well, so it's going to be a very fun evening!

Fortunately for me, they ARE going to be playing in my city, cozy little Philly, as the second stop of the tour (at the same venue I saw Gojira at a few months ago, and a wonderful venue it was). Interestingly, though, this will only be Wintersun's second time in North America, and I'm excited to get the chance to see Fleshgod, as I was supposed to see them last September for my birthday but that show got cancelled and I ended up going to Morbid Angel & Dark Funeral instead.

Though, it makes me wonder exactly when Fleshgod's next album is scheduled to come out. I mean, the last one they released was Agony, two years ago, and it is indeed a great album, but they seem to be so busy touring lately. They announced work on a new one, then went on tour with Scepticflesh, immediately after which they were announced to be accompanying Wintersun this August/September. At this rate, they won't be able to get much work done until next year! And I'm pretty eager for new material from them. Are we going to consider this the "Two Full-Length Albums" Tour?

If only it included Necrophagist, maybe we would, after everyone got over their seizures.

Regardless, my friends and I are ALL looking forward to this show. It's going to be a hell of a time, so make sure you catch them if they're stopping in your town.

(Dates taken from the promotional photo on Wintersun's official Facebook page. Visit for more info. on the tour. Also visit to learn about the special contest they have going on for this tour with a fantastic reward for the winner. Link to follow blog entry.)

WINTERSUN-Sons of Winter and Stars (album version, taken from Time I):

MOSHING & STAGE DIVING
Alright, so this is where we finally get to where I talk somewhat about the show I attended last night, the Decibel Magazine Tour with Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Immolation.

God DAMN did this show hurt!

The venue was great (Union Transfer in Philadelphia, PA), and was the first one I'd been to that had no barrier set up a few feet from the stage. Nope, we were leaning against the stage. I know that's pretty common in European venues, but I've hardly heard of/seen places in the US that are set up in such a way. Anyway, I went with my brother and our friend, and we got there pretty early (a little before 5:30 for a show whose doors opened at 6:30) and were able to find a great place to stand at the very front (we stood right in front of Alex during Cannibal's set; was pretty awesome, especially since I'm fond of bassists).

The crowd was pretty tranquil during Drugs of Faith, the first band, which wasn't too surprising. Their vocalist seemed like a pretty cool guy, too. I was surprised, however, by how rowdy some people got during Magrudergrind. I really wasn't expecting any moshing until Immolation, at least, but it was a bit reversed. People were mostly still during Immolation except for a few headbangers towards the front. They were great, though.

And then it was time for Napalm Death.
And it was just raining bodies.

People were stage-diving every maybe three seconds, with people going up while  others were jumping down...it made it pretty hard to catch everyone, and I saw a few people sail right to the floor. We helped them all up, of course, but we couldn't save 'em all. I'll be honest: as I mentioned earlier, I don't very often hear of venues set up like the UT in the States, so this was my first experience with stage diving in-person. And oh boy was it quite the experience.

Despite all the fun I had, and all the battle scars I got, I couldn't help but notice a few things that didn't exactly follow what I considered to be "proper concert etiquette".

I know, I know; we're metalheads, we're a rowdy bunch, we can take a boot to the face or a kick in the balls, and the rough demeanor is a part of who we are. I GET IT. But come on, we have to remember that, despite saying we're "made of metal", we're still humans, and people can get seriously injured, especially with how rough some people go with their diving. Here are a few things I'd like to comment on:

1. If you're a bigger guy (or girl)...we love you like a brother (or sister), just as much as love anyone else (really, we do), but if you think it's a good idea to drive yourself into a group of the less-bulky guys or girls, you might want to rethink your choice or location of diving. This isn't just a precaution for the people you might land on, but you could also hurt yourself. If you dive into a collection of bone-thin spectators, they might not be able to support you, and they will drop you.
And it will hurt.

2. Be mindful of where you're diving...because if you decide you want to fall onto the smallest person in the front row, repeatedly, that makes you a bit of an ass.

3. If you're being an ass, we will let you fall. We'll help you back up to your feet, as is customary, but if you're a complete asshole to the people around you and then you expect them to catch you...prepare to hit the floor.

4. Make sure everyone around you is alright if you see it get rough. This is just common courtesy, and it really is appreciated. Even if the guy next to you was an asshole five minutes ago, if you see him get punted in the head, make sure he's still good to go.
At the show last evening, one of the crowd surfers fell right on my head and I was too busy headbanging to pay attention, so my face smacked hard on the stage. One of  the guys behind me saw and pulled me back to make sure I was alright. Twice. The first to make sure I was still awake and alert, the second a few minutes later to make sure I wasn't bleeding. When I saw him on my way out at the end of the show, he asked how I was. It's truly appreciated! (And yes, I thanked him for looking out for me.)

5. Get up and get down.
Some people might not agree with this one as much as others, but I feel that once you get yourself on stage, go ahead, run to the other side, maybe give Mark Greenway a high five, and jump down. We're there to see the band performing, not watch you try to compete with George Fisher to see who can windmill faster. Because honestly, unless you're Orion, you will lose, and we know that already.

6. If a female decides she's got the guts to jump up on stage and puts her trust in you to catch her, catch her, but don't take advantage of the opportunity to intentionally grope her. The key word there is INTENTIONALLY. I get that accidents happen, and you at some point may find your hand was in another guy's crotch while he was crowd surfing, but don't take advantage of the fact that a girl's doing it. Don't intentionally ball-tap a guy, don't intentionally grope a girl...it makes you look like an asshole.

7. Ladies, I know we tend to be lighter than guys, it's just how our bodies are, but you are not as light as air.  Chances are, you still weigh more than 110 or so pounds, and it hurts if 110+ pounds is suddenly dropped on someone's head. You need to be just as cautious and aware as the guys who are diving beside you.

8. If someone loses something, you need to chill out for a few seconds or however long it takes and let them look for it. It happened last night, one guy dropped and lost his cell phone, and everyone around him stopped what they were doing and helped him look. He found it, and we picked right back up where we left off. If you find something -- keys, a wallet, a bracelet, a shoe -- wait until the time between songs, when everyone's taking a breather, and ask around. If nobody around you lost it, hold it up and use your voice and ask, "did anyone lose (item)?" Shit happens, stuff falls out of pockets, and they'll appreciate it getting returned to them.

9. Overall, just be careful. I know getting kicked in the head or punched in the eye or the occasional bloody nose or K.O. is inevitable (after all, it is a metal show), but don't intentionally try to hurt someone, because the entire crowd will go after you like wolves on a deer carcass if you do.

Other than that, you can dive where ever the hell you want, on whoever the hell you want, and as many times as you want. Just don't be an ass about it is all. We are more than happy to catch you, to throw you around, but don't ruin it for  people by being obnoxious and reckless.

Oh, and don't hit the god damn band members.
Apparently it happened last night, where someone hit or almost hit Corpsegrinder, and he was pretty pissed about it. It's out of respect...you didn't pay money to use him as a punching bag, and he's a person just like you and everyone else around you that you consider your brother.

All of this really just boils down to remembering you and the people around you are people, and they can get hurt, and they deserve common courtesy.

Since there's no videos of last night's performance online as of yet, here's the setlist I got from the end of Cannibal Corpse's performance:

And, of course, the song that was used for the title of this entry:
DEATH-Together as One (Human)
